Directions for Submission of Hunter-Killed Deer Specimens for Chronic Wasting Disease
The Illinois Department of Agriculture’s Animal Disease Laboratories are offering CWD testing. Test results will be available within three to six weeks of submission. It is suggested that the meat be frozen until test results are known. There is no current evidence that CWD can be transmitted to humans; World Health Organization guidelines, however, recommend that CWD positive animals not be consumed by humans or animals.

Please observe the following submission protocol:
- Remove the head from the deer near the head by separating the vertebrae from the skull with a knife or saw.
- It is crucial that the specimens be taken from the head as soon as possible after death of the animal. Until they are taken, please refrigerate the head. Do not freeze the head or tissues. Rotten or unsuitable tissues can not be tested.
- Complete the Submission Form.
- Deliver the head to either the Galesburg or Centralia Animal Disease Laboratory for testing. Laboratory hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both laboratories have night depositories where heads can be left after hours. Identification tags will be available at the depository and must be filled out completely to ensure proper reporting of test results.
- The cost of the testing is $50.00.
- Alternatively, you may take the deer head to a local veterinarian to remove the required tissues and submit them to the laboratory.
- The test results will be reported to you by mail.
